Counting the cost of ICT charity

John Smith is right to want to closely examine the cost of providing refurbished computers to hospitals and schools in developing countries (Check out other PC recyclers, 16 June).

To deliver high-quality ICT development solutions involves expert training and support on the ground, and demands the provision of adaptive software and peripherals. For this reason a professional, effective solution often costs a little more than the cheapest solution available.

In fact, most people would agree that low-cost is more often an indicator of poor quality than it is of high value.

There is a growing and urgent demand for the donation of PCs for charitable re-use in developing country schools and hospitals. Computer Aid is the UK's most experienced not-for-profit provider of practical ICT solutions in developing countries and we appeal to UK businesses to join us in helping to bridge the digital divide.
